Mini Book Review: Verity by Claire Farrell

Mini Reviews are for books I read recently but enough time has past to not remember key details of the story, or I felt there was not enough to talk about for a full in depth review. These will be short and give a general feel of the book in terms of recommendation.

Description: Sixteen-year-old Perdita Rivers has spent her entire sheltered life being told what to do. Lately, she’s felt ready for a change, and the universe seems to agree. Her new best friend’s brother is the boy of Perdita’s dreams. Literally.

Even though he plays hot and cold, she’s sure there’s more to it, but she’s kind of distracted by the sense she’s being followed – not to mention the rumours of wild animal sightings that seem to mean more to her new crush’s family than they should. Perdy’s on a mission to find the truth, but maybe the truth is the danger she should hide from, after all.

This was pretty much a let down. Personally I didn’t find this book very good. The writing was decent but the way the characters interacted and the plot devices all seemed extremely forced. There was little character development besides Perdy’s best friend deciding she is boy crazy and a backstabbing nitwit. The timeline in this book was also very rushed. We don’t get a lot of information to begin with and when I got to the end of the first book I was just left underwhelmed and disappointed. It was a quick enough read but I’m not planning on finishing the series.

The first book is free so you can’t go wrong there but just don’t expect some groundbreaking werewolf love story. This seems to be a mash up of all the good things from other paranormal YA books but forced into one very lackluster read.
